One of the loveliest parts of my job is my proximity to beautiful books, and odd paper items.
These are a few images of things I've encountered, this week.
Such eye candy!

End-of-the-Year Etsy Update

Rather hesitantly, I reopened my Etsy store.
It was one of those "eh, why not" acts that I sometimes regret.

Knowing that the holiday rush was in full-swing, I dreaded a a slew of additions to my to-do list. But, eh, why not? Christmas is not a busy time for my strange little shop. I doubt I'll sell a single thing.

Wrong!

Within three days I had three orders, one being a rather large commissioned piece.

Thankfully, I'm treading water as I care for an increasingly opinionated infant, acclimate to working at the bookshop with a baby in tow, scramble to finish my army of handmade Christmas gifts, and (hopefully) finish setting up my new studio. Oh, and laundry. We're using cloth diapers, and it feels as though I'm forever behind on laundry.

The commissioned piece I mentioned is a set of paper orchids made from an antique copy of Jane Eyre. It's going to be lovely! I'm thinking I'll pair them with a very pretty cut-glass bud vase.

Here are a few photos showing the process:

Etsy, or How I've Not Been Very Productive At All

More pre-mommy time at home has resulted more time spent (not "wasted"!) on artsy social networking sites.

If you want to keep up with my virtual inspiration boards, you can find me on Pinterest. Lately, I've used it to bookmark ideas for upcoming house projects, garden ideas... and gift ideas -- so don't go digging too deep! There's also cute stuff to be found on Baby Barton's Etsy Wishlist and my ever-evolving Etsy favorites list, Etsy Items I Adore. I'm slowly getting sucked in to what some people might define as "crunchy" mommy stuff, like Waldorf toys and simple living blogs. If you think that's neat, you might like this list of beautiful blogs I'm compiling.

My own Etsy shop, Hobgoblins, has been on the backburner these last two weeks. When I'm not scrambling to complete commissioned pieces, I'm deliberating over what social networking sites might be worth the investment of time, when it comes to marketing my shop and art online. Is Pinterest a good platform? What about Instagram? Should I become more involved in the Etsy community? Or, should I focus my time and energy locally, promote more in the local shops I have a relationship with, and work on a collection for a gallery show? (Yes, I probably should!)

Instead of being productive, I sit and THINK about being productive. Or, I look at other people being productive and pretend that it counts as personal productivity. All the while, my to-do list grows as quickly as the pile of neat things to add to my Etsy shop. Just when I think I should get back to work on a project, I remember that CHRISTMAS IS COMING. I should work on gifts. I should write. I should read that review book that arrived last week. I should write the review for the LAST review book. I should learn to knit. I should learn to make picture frames. Oh, and the baby will be here any day, now... at which point I just might lose all time and motivation.

And so I do nothing Etsy-related, and instead I go outside and work in the garden.

At least it's nice outside!

Valentine's Day Surprise

I'm in the midst of a minor FREAKOUT.

BookRiot.com featured my paper orchids in their Booklover Gift Guide for Valentine's Day.

ACK!

So far, it's resulted in lots of traffic to my Etsy Store, and a lot of spastic flailing as I celebrate at the bookshop.

I'm thinking about making a new business card...

An even briefer update...

Yes, I'm still doing that "Etsy Stuff"...

... and it's going pretty well!
Thanks for asking.

Adversaria: Assemblage

It's high time I updated the Hobgoblins Etsy shop.
Last night I listed a few new assemblage canvases,
and was flattered by the positive response.

This morning I'll add a few more,
and then finish up some more bookmarks
for the little Hobgoblins display at the book shop.

If I thought I could keep up with the "demand"
I would start selling things via consignment in Old Town.
Instead, I'll take it slow and see what develops.

I made a CINNAMON ROLL CHEESECAKE
last night, and am about to make cream cheese frosting.
If you'd like to salivate all over your technological device,

Survived another book show!

The 55th Michigan Antiquarian Book and Paper Show
was a great success!Part of my job is to help organize
and run this, the Midwest's largest show.

I don't have official confirmation,
but I believe it to be the second largest
show in the country, just behind the big show in NYC.
We're more than double the size of the antiquarian show
in Chicago. We're nearing our thirtieth anniversary,
and do two shows a year here in Lansing. Thankfully,
we have show preparations down to a science, now.

Once again, I came down with a nasty chest cold
two days before the show. When this happened last
autumn I had to stay in bed while the show went on
without me. It must, you know.

This time, I managed to make it out of bed and into
a nice enough outfit. The medicine I took kept me
slightly loopy, giggly and wiggly, but I strutted around
in my lovely "book show heels" well enough to fool
the guests and vendors. My favorite part, by far,
was taking photos of some of the book sellers during
the afternoon lull. If you're not a fan of books or paper,
you'd still get your money's worth if you came to the
show to people watch. They come from as far away
as Quebec and Texas (though not California,
as the LSJ suggested in their show write-up).

Sean and I splurged a bit, and bought a truly jaw-dropping
collection of four "propaganda" prints from 1931.

This one's my favorite!

They were printed in Lansing and distributed by the
Michigan Tuberculosis Association.
They feature the most gorgeous nature illustrations
by wildlife artist Charles Livingston Bull. They compliment
the WWI and WWII propaganda posters we've bought
at past shows. Now, I need to put my framing tools
to good use and build some quarter-sawn oak fames!

It seemed to be a pretty good show.
We had about a dozen new dealers exhibiting,
and our porter team was stellar. Many thanks
to Leighanna, Alicia, Russ and Sean. And Keith.
We're not quite done unpacking at Curious,
but we're off to a good start. Mark suspects that
we've come back with more sports and movie stuff
than we took with us, but that isn't much of a surprise.
I'm pretty sure Ray sneaks things into the shop
we're not looking. The trick is finding a place to keep it all.

I used the book show as my Grand Unveiling.
Ray, Susan and Ruth approved my paper flowers,
and I bedecked the Archvies booth with them.

Those who noticed were impressed, and I may even
wind up selling a few of them in my Etsy shop.
We'll see.
I have about a dozen Phalaenopsis stems left, and a
few dozen little button flowers.

I've already moved on to other crafting projects,
so those will be the only flowers for a while.

I met some very nice girls at the show, and I think we might
start a blasphemous book club, where instead of reading
we rip books apart and turn them into art.

The few photos that were taken of me at the show are
hilariously embarrassing
and can be found on the Curious Facebook page.

There is so much more to say about my chaotic, exhausting
weekend. I'll be cleaning up the wreckage-strewn house
for the rest of the evening. I must also try to beat this
cold before we head down to Harrison Township this weekend.
Must. Get. Well.

No Surprise Here...

Welcome to January 10, 2012 - my Etsy Store Launch Day!

Please ignore the fact that I am running late and have not actually launched, yet.

To distract you, here are some fabulous Etsy sellers and items that I admire greatly.

Now that you've seen some of my inspiration,
check out my own (currently empty) Etsy store.
Things will start happening here, quite soon.

Making Stuff, Selling Stuff, Burning Stuff

I've had blogs all over the web, mostly abandoned
and buried by now. Some things, however, will never
disappear into the Google chasm....
This week, I've been focusing on a different form
of my internet identity.
(Is that statement as pompous as it sounds?!)
Etsy.
Etsy. Etsy. Etsy.

Etsy and I go way back.
I think I first found it when I was looking for
Artist Trading Cards... or maybe it was the jewelry.
Or the vintage clothes and home decor?

My-Sister-the-Artist and I could happily spend hours
trolling through the treasures to be found on Etsy.

Taquito,
(the aforementioned sister)
has a respectable
amount of Etsy selling experience.
I'm more of an Ebay seller, myself.
Yesterday, I jumped ship.

There's nothing there, yet.
I'm taking this next month to work on
my "products" before "rolling out my line"
(Bwahahahah business speak is silly!)
in early January - just in time for
Valentines Day!

Lansing was walloped with about
8 inches of heavy, wet snow over
a sheet of frozen rain.

Our back yard - the bough is touching the ground, burdened.

Even with sidewalks, shoveling here is nowhere near as bad
as it was growing up, with that extra-long driveway!

Good thing I moved more than a few armloads of
firewood into the garage, the previous morning!
I've quickly become the house's expert fire builder.
